Chapter Eight

Dessa

It took three more days before my migraine finally subsided enough I could function. Ares had helped with the children, and so had several of the old ladies. Even though I still hadn’t met anyone other than Lavender, Savior had asked someone named Ridley and another woman named Darian to help. I’d been in bed when they picked Judd and Junie up. It made me feel like the worst mother ever. Not only couldn’t I take care of them, but people I’d never met had fed my children and entertained them while I rested.

I eyed the door from my wheelchair. It had taken me a while, but I’d bathed this morning and put on a pale pink sundress with a small daisy print. I’d even pulled my hair back in a clip with a few tendrils hanging on either side of my face. While I didn’t care much for makeup, I’d used a tinted lip balm so I wouldn’t look so pale.

I gathered my courage and opened the front door, then rolled out onto the porch. I went down the ramp and into the driveway. Since I didn’t have a way to drive, I took my time wheeling toward the clubhouse. Savior had said I could stop by anytime I needed to see him. Although, my trip had more to do with what I’d overheard last night. Ares had been on the phone with one of her friends in the compound -- Aura. I hadn’t met the girl yet, but they’d said something about club whores.

The term whore was simple enough to understand. Adding club to it, I figured they were women who entertained the bikers here at the Dixie Reapers. I vaguely remembered him calling Sonja one, and he’d said she’d given herself up to whoever wanted her. But I hadn’t had time to really question it. Too much had happened too fast. Ares had said they were at the clubhouse, which is where Savior spent so much of his time. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust him. He’d said he would be faithful to me, and I didn’t have a reason to doubt him. But I’d met plenty of women who went after married men, and I knew they could be relentless.

I made it down the road past six houses and I saw the clubhouse in the distance. Now would have been a good time to have a motorized chair. I’d never had to wheel myself very far, and I knew my arms would be aching by the time I got back to the house. Unless someone gave me a ride home.

“What in the hell are you doing?” a man called out from a nearby house.

I glanced his way. “Riding a pony. What’s it look like?”

He snorted. “And here I thought you’d be the least amount of trouble of all the ladies. Already getting sassy and haven’t even met all of them yet.”

I wasn’t sure how to take his words. Deciding his statement didn’t require anything else from me, I kept rolling forward.
